FRONTERAS
2023 - 2024
Fronteras is a series of collaboratories produced by the UC San Diego Center on Global Justice, in collaboration with the nonprofit Casa Familiar, as part of a five-year arts and culture program funded by the Mellon Foundation to activate and transform a community space into a point of convergence for various generations and cultural backgrounds, to explore environmental justice through music. Fronteras bring established international musicians and composers, together with performers from the UC San Diego Theatre and Dance Department, dancers from Lux Boreal—a Tijuana-based dance company—and San Ysidro-based artists and community members to engage in interpretative conversations, process-based workshops and music-led dialogues, culminating in public performances under the musical direction of UC San Diego professors.
