LA CASA DEL PUEBLO

2019 - 2024

La Casa del Pueblo is home of the UCSD-Divina Community Station, an ongoing development located at a site of conflict that exemplifies the social and environmental crises of the Laureles Canyon, an informal settlement in the outskirts of Tijuana. Its strategic location near the US–Mexico border wall and its proximity to the Tijuana River Estuary in San Diego makes it an ideal site for advancing collaborative strategies for bioregional environmental policies, expanding public awareness of the socio-ecological interdependencies between both nations. La Casa del Pueblo is a partnership between UC San Diego and Colonos de la Divina Providencia, a nonprofit organization that sits across the street from a precarious elementary school impacted by toxic runoff from illegal dumpsites. La Casa del Pueblo is a physical and programmatic infrastructure embedded in an existing community space, where community leaders, students and researchers come together to support children and elders with meals, medical aid, cultural activities and educational programs designed to raise awareness about the vulnerabilities they are exposed to, focusing on the positive impact that native plants have against deforestation, erosion, landslides and flash floods.
