2019

Back in 2019, right before the world crumbled to COVID, I was invited to celebrate a friend's wedding in Seoul. And how grateful I am! Seoul is one of the few places on Earth where you can feel teleported into the future. The technological gap between metropolises in East Asia and the developed Western world is unquestionably evident, but what's more admirable is the cultural and architectural heritage cities like Seoul hold. Urban and civil planning was a key concept when Seoul was first designed to serve as a capital in the late 14th century, during the Joseon dynasty. Back then, the city was surrounded by a series of towering walls—known as the Fortress Wall of Seoul—to regulate visitors from other regions and protect it against invaders. As we searched for the "Five Grand Palaces" and learned about Korean culture, we came across lively street food markets, vernacular homes, traditional art performances and the most amicable and quiet mobilizations I've ever witnessed. The day of the wedding, everyone was as excited as the bride and the groom were. The couple got married on the last floor of a skyscraper, with a stunning panoramic view. As the ceremony came to an end, the couple wore hanboks—Korean traditional attires—while performing the pyebaek ceremony, a ceremony where both families and newlyweds share a moment of love and wisdom. Seoul was an unforgettable experience; one that will never repeat itself and one that I’ll be grateful for forever.
