SIKKIM

2011

After visiting some of the most popular attractions across Northern India, I found myself a bit overwhelmed by both tourists and locals. In search of a more peaceful experience, I embarked myself on a full-day cross-country train journey to the Eastern Himalaya. Sikkim was my final destination on one of my most memorable trips ever. Sikkim is a small state in northeastern India, bordered by Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal, and it is notable for its biodiversity, as well as its multiethnic and multilingual culture. What striked me the most about this remote territory was the humbleness and gratitude of people. In my short-lived life, I had never been invited by strangers that I happened to meet on the street, to spend a whole afternoon at their homes, learning about their everyday traditions. Sikkim was my introduction to Buddhism, and the beginning of a new mindset and perception of my surroundings.
