TIJUANA

2017 - 2018

Just across the border from San Diego lies Tijuana, the manufacturing capital of North America. International trade, medical services, tourism and illegal activities make this small city a highly transited destination for Americans. On the other hand, economic opportunities in the United States attract Mexicans living across the border, making the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation the busiest international land-transited border region in the Western World. Unfortunately, due to the extensive presence of organized crime and Mexican cartels, Tijuana regularly ranks among the most violent cities by homicide rate. Tijuana also suffers a continuous tragedy of constant migration, with numerous nationalities converging in search of a better future across the border. Few places around the world exemplify the negligence of states and international laws as the San Diego–Tijuana cross-border region does. Despite its unfavorable qualities, Tijuana is the gateway to Latin American culture: a young, hectic and culinary hotspot where streets burst with life, entertainment and tastes; a place that struggles in many ways but doesn’t fail to be remembered.
